The History behind Black Friday

The first recorded use of the term "Black Friday" in history is not related to post-Thanksgiving holiday sale shopping but to a financial crisis: specifically, the crash of the U.S. gold market on September 24 of 1869. Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, two well known ruthless Wall Street investors worked together to buy as much gold as possible, hoping the price of gold would sky-rocket as a result of their idea and sell it afterwards with astronomical profit. On this particular day of September the conspiracy unraveled and sent the stock-market in to huge fall, bankrupting almost everyone in Wall Street from barons to farmers.

Nowadays the official but inaccurate story behind the tradition is related to retailers and their style of accounting. If retailers had sold a whole year at a loss, they were "in the red" as losses were marked with a red pen in the accounting book. But the day after Thanksgiving, with the help of holiday shoppers and tourists splashing so much money during the holiday, the retailers "went black" as profitable sales were marked with a black pen. The story in general is real but it's not the real backstory behind the term Black Friday.

The real history of what is now known as Black Friday is based on 1950s Philadelphia, where police in the city used the term the day after Thanksgiving, when suburb shoppers and tourists flooded into the city before the big annual Army-Navy american football game. Police lost their day off and the chaos adding to the law enforcment headaches. In the late 1980s, what is now known as Black Friday was finally born and expanded across the U.S. as a "positive" day of shopping with huge discounts. In Finland, the first Black Friday discounts began to appear in the second half of 2000s.
